Letters from Q D Leavis to her daughter Kate: File 5, 1968-12 - 1980
Scope and Contents
Chiefly addressed to Kate at her flat in Twickenham. There are very few letters after her father became ill in 1977 and until her mother's death in 1981 as Kate was spending every weekend in Cambridge. Again, there is considerable mention of culinary matters and matters relating to the furnishing and maintenance of 12 Bulstrode Gardens. 14 April 1969 - addressed from Padua, where QD has 'been invited to return to give courses of a month at each place' [Rome and Padua]; 13 September 1969 - QD is 'working on the Dickens book at every spare moment; 9 March 1973 - mentions 'The Mrs Oliphant M.S. - - ' [Q D Leavis wrote an introduction for a 1974 edition of Margaret Oliphant's Autobiography and Letters] and she is 'hoping to embark on another article for a periodical now I've got some domestic help'; 7 August 1976 - describes at length Robin's 'engagement to a Dutch girl' and mentions finishing and posting off 'my Melville essay to Edinburgh'; 1980 - a postcard from Belfast University - QD is lecturing and giving seminars in Belfast, Dublin and Maynooth.
