Diaries: Volume 17, 1956-06-07 - 1963-07-20
Scope and Contents
Flyleaf inscribed ‘Diary of Margaret Smith, of 11 Elm Park Mansions, Park Walk, SW10. M S’s output of occasional articles and reviews still continues sporadically between the ages of 71 and 79, including work on Sufism, and her remaining time continues to be occupied, as in the previous volume, with reading, writing letters, visiting Chelsea Library, shopping, knitting, cooking, missionary societies and committees, meetings of the Royal Asiatic Society, Girton Roll meetings, visits to Girton and Oxford, increased attendance at church, visiting exhibitions, tending her sisters’ graves, walking, visiting Kew Gardens, meeting friends, including Dorothy Tarrant and M C W (often at the University Women’s Club), having some medical treatment, and listening to the radio. She takes holidays in Switzerland in 1957, 1959, 1960 and 1962. In September 1956 and March 1960 she attends British Orientalists Conferences. Much time is spent visiting her sister Clara, whose health is deteriorating. M S’s writing becomes increasingly shaky and difficult to decipher in this volume, though it appears that this was not the last volume she wrote. The last entry (20 July 1963) is fairly typical at this point: ‘This morning shopping & cooking; made greengage jam. This afternoon read at the Chelsea Library: later jobs, reading, knitting & listening-in [ie listening to the radio] (to be continued)’.
