Diaries: Volume 16, 1950-09-05 - 1956-06-06
Scope and Contents
Flyleaf inscribed ‘Diary of Margaret Smith of 11 Park Mansions SW10 Sept 5th 1950’. M S continues to write and be published, although her output is becoming more sporadic now between the ages of 65 and 71 and appears to consist largely of occasional articles and reviews. Otherwise her time is occupied with reading, writing letters, shopping, knitting, cooking, missionary societies and committees, meetings of the Royal Asiatic Society, Girton Roll meetings, visits to Girton and Oxford, increased attendance at church, visiting exhibitions, tending her sisters’ graves, walking, visiting Kew Gardens, meeting her sister Clara and friends, including Dorothy Tarrant and M C W (often at the University Women’s Club), and listening to the radio. She continues to take a holiday in Switzerland every other summer. She notes on 21 May 1953 the death of Miss Netta Jex-Blake. In August 1954 she attends a congress of orientalists in Cambridge.
