Scope and Contents

Flyleaf inscribed 'Diary of Margaret Smith. Preston. July 1916 (continued)'. M S continues with war work, has a number of interviews for teaching and accepts a post at Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School, where she teaches history during 1917, occasionally affected by the events of war. She returns to Cairo in January 1918, in spite of wartime risks (9 February 1918 - 'Ship astern of us' is torpedoed - 'We got into lifebelts & stood by the boats - - - ') for a mix of Government work, Arabic study and teaching, including teaching history to army officers. Entries for 27 August and 1 October 1918 note the illness and death of her mother. Entries in March and April 1919 note the political situation in Egypt [ie revolution against British occupation] and on 9 April M S is evacuated to Heliopolis with a Miss Spears. She returns to Cairo and works for the Cables Dept of the RAF for a few months, noting on 28 August 1919 that there is 'Still nothing to do in a department which the Government has evidently forgotten to shut down'. She then teaches in Abbassia, in the face of ongoing riots, demonstrations and protest, from September 1919 to June 1920, returning to London in June 1920, where she attends an Old Girtonians lunch on July 3rd. She then visits Girton at the end of July - 'very glad to see it all again' - and returns to Preston.
