Scope and Contents
Flyleaf inscribed 'Diary of Margaret Smith 1909'. Written in Beyrout, where M S is still teaching in a girls’ school. The daily round includes teaching, preparing lessons, social calls (mostly on fellow Britons), prayer meetings, reading, studying Arabic, and taking walks. She has a period of leave in England from June to September 1910, during which she attends missionary conferences in Edinburgh and Baslow and visits friends and family in London, Preston and Cambridge. Loose in volume: postcard of Littlehampton addressed to Gretchen Smith, East Cliff, Preston, 25 April 1910, from D.T. [probably Dorothy Tarrant].
