Diaries: Volume 5, 1905-04-24 - 1906-02-11
Scope and Contents
Flyleaf inscribed 'G. Smith. Apr. 1905'. This volume covers the middle period of M S's years at Girton, during which Ethel Sandford becomes a close friend. 23 May 1905: M S mentions a Tripos tea in Honeysuckle Walk attended by classicists and historians, including Ethel Sandford, Esther Oliphant, J Wilson, D Zimmern, E Buckley and M M Dunlop [it is possible that this is the tea pictured in the 1905 postcard entitled 'al-fresco tea in Honeysuckle Walk']. 17 June 1905: M S notes that she got a Third in her first year examinations. July 1905: attends a 'week's conference of the B.C.C.V.' [appears to be a retreat / Bible study week?] at Conishead, Ulverstone, during which she chats to a Miss London, and afterwards says the conference has 'determined my life-purpose', to become a foreign missionary. 12 August: notes the death of Esther Oliphant from typhoid.
