Scope and Contents

The letters are addressed variously from Newlands, Woodstock Road, Oxford; Girton College; Court Place (home of Bertrand Russell); and Greenoaks, Altrincham, Cheshire. The letters are chiefly of a personal nature, with frequent discussion of other friends (particularly M G Jones [Gwladys Jones, Girton 1905]; Margaret Jones [Margaret Gwendolen Coursolles Jones, later Mrs Game, 1887-1972, Newnham 1907, called 'Puppy' by Eileen]; and Karin Costelloe [Newnham 1907, later Mrs Stephen], occasionally discussing academic matters and women's suffrage.
23 March 1910: mentions her sister Beryl's Girton entrance examination;
7 April 1910: lengthy description of the aftermath of her grandfather's death and funeral, the reaction of her aunts etc - 'funeral - was rather a ghastly affair - I do loathe these functions - ' and comment on funerals generally. Also a debate with an uncle on the subject of women's suffrage, the uncle declaring 'They want spanking - ', and EEP's furious reaction;
29 June 1910: description of a trip to London and on to Hindhead, Surrey, with 'Kate' [Catriona Marion Stewart Robertson, Girton 1908, later Lady Garrett];
August 1910: several letters from Court Place, home of Bertrand and Alys Russell, having German lessons from AR together with Karin Costelloe [niece of Alys Russell], and attending a suffrage meeting with AR;
28 August 1910: description of Greenoaks, Altrincham, Cheshire, where EEP was staying with a great-aunt, describing it as 'concentrated essence of mid-Victorianism, after the Victorians had ceased to be interesting';
September 1910: visits to Edward Armstrong [Bursar and history tutor at Queen's College, Oxford], who 'has been seized by an unconquerable affection for me'.
The file also contains several verses and poems [some written by EEP?].
