Alfred writes after the death of his wife [Anna Mary, née Howitt]. He thanks Bessie for her letter, saying ‘Margaret will have written to you with the sad details’. He says he feels unable to write much but will visit Bessie when he returns to London. It was hard for him to see nothing of Anna but the flowers on her grave. Mrs [Mary] Howitt has shown him Madame [Barbara] Bodichon’s letter.
