Scope and Contents

File containing photocopies of typescript drafts of articles written by P D James for The Spectator on a wide variety of subjects, including shorter contributions for The Spectator Diary and some longer articles, together with photocopies of some of the final published articles and related correspondence with Dominic Lawson (editor 1990-95) and Boris Johnson (editor 1999-2005).
Subjects include: Crime; Identity Cards; Social Services; Characters in Novels; Picnics; Jeffrey Archer; Sales; Noise; Myra Hindley; BBC; Post Bag; Why I am a Conservative; Sleep; American Tour; Before Publication; Slimming; The British Literature Prize; Church Fetes; Fox in the Garden; Advertisements for Lovers; Midwifery Today; Counselling; Inner-city Riots; and William Tyndale.
Photocopies of final published articles include ‘A nice gentle murder: The pleasures of ‘Golden Age’ detective fiction and why it can no longer be written’, together with PDJ’s poem ‘Bleeding-under-Wychwood’, published December 2013.
The file also contains the following: PDJ’s Foreword to the Spectator Annual 1993; entries from PDJ for Spectator competitions; review of Sara Paretsky, Writing in an Age of Silence, 2003; and a poem on Dr David Kelly [1944-2003, scientist and authority on biological warfare] which PDJ was moved to write on his death in July 2003 and which was published in The Spectator 2 August 2003, together with related correspondence with The Spectator.
