Cambridge and County Girls' High School Magazine, 1933 - 1936
Scope and Contents
File containing copies of three editions of the school magazine, containing items written by P D James as a schoolgirl, as follows:
1) Michaelmas 1933: contains, on page 24, a poem entitled ‘Water’ composed by Phyllis James, Form IIIA;
2) Michaelmas 1934: contains, on pages 15-16, a poem entitled ‘The Seven Ages of a Schoolgirl’, composed by Phyllis James, Form IVAI; also contains, on pages 17-18, a poem entitled ‘The Reveille of Springtime’, composed by Margaret Slawson [later Mallett];
3) Michaelmas 1936: contains, on pages 10-17, a short story entitled ‘ 'Luve-Ni Wai' (Blue Wings)’, written by Phyllis James, Form Upper VA. The frontispiece of the magazine is an untitled drawing [or lino-cut?] by Margaret Slawson, Form VI.
Note: on page 44 of 'Time to be in Earnest', P D James writes 'my first appearance in print was - - - in 1935 or 1936 when I won a short story prize at the Cambridge High School for Girls and my winning entry was published in the school magazine. I wish I still had a copy'.

Donated February 2017 by Heather O'Neill, daughter of Margaret Mallett, nee Slawson, a school contemporary of P D James, who had kept the magazines since her school days and left them to her daughter Heather in her effects.
