'AUT etc: essayists and background': File 1, 1934 - 1960
Scope and Contents
‘Unamuno and the Generation of ’98’ [Miguel de Unamuno, 1864-1936, Spanish Basque essayist, novelist, poet, playwright, philosopher, professor of Greek and Classics and later Rector of the University of Salamanca. ‘The Generation of 1898’ was a name given to a group of young men of the Spanish intelligentsia more or less at the beginning of their careers at the end of the 19thC]. These papers appear to have been used as [part of?] a series of lectures on the period 1868-1938. They include a typescript copy of ‘The Generation of ’98 and its significance’: paper read by Helen F Grant to the National Council of Women (International Group, Birmingham Branch) on December 14th 1934 (22 page typescript with ms annotations and amendments). Other papers / essays in the file include ‘Towards the Modern Age: The Generation of 1898’; ‘Education in Spain - its problems and significance’; ‘The Generation of ’98 and its influence on modern Spain’, and ‘Unamuno’. The file also contains notes on Angel Ganivet and [Joaquin] Costa. A few of the notes are in Spanish.
