Personal diaries: Volume 17, 1929-07-31 - 1929-12-25
Scope and Contents
Most of this volume concerns the continued attraction between Alethea and Piccoli. Also: a holiday with Agatha and Edith Laspeyres in Bonn; return to Girton for a 4th year where she sits 'at little high with just Helen Megaw, Sybil Hawkey, Ena Mitchell and Fanny Stubbins'; death and funeral of Oracle [grandfather] October 1929; and a Social Study week in the Christmas vacation at Bishop Creighton settlement in Fulham, London where she shares a room with Nancy Cramp, a Girtonian. Other acquaintances and visitors include Ruth Warren, Tom Quibell, Humphrey Warren, Michael Redgrave, Hugh Stewart, Geoffrey Rossetti, Juan Mascaro, and Alistair Cooke. Alethea describes a number of lectures attended, given by Piccoli (including his inaugural lecture as professor of Italian), Wittgenstein and others, including Heretics Society and Italian Society lectures (including a lecture given by Alefrida in Italian to the latter). There is a little more than usual on Agatha in this volume, as she has joined Alethea at Girton. Loose at back: a piece of mistletoe, 'from Raffaello Piccoli. Magdalene. October 16th 1929'. Also loose at back: 'To Alethea. A solemn poem on the occasion of her arrival, & 21st birthday', author unknown.
