Scope and Contents

Written at Fordfield; also at King's Norton, near Birmingham, while staying with Julius, Mina Walter and Constance in April 1925. A particular interest in this volume is Alethea's attendance at lectures given by John Middleton Murry on Keats at Trinity College, including several descriptions of the man and the lectures - p 13 has a picture of JMM taped in and p 21 contains a pencil sketch of him, 29 January 1925. Alethea and Agatha are 'confirmed' at a service on 4 April. Cambridge University undergraduate acquaintances include John Blackie, Aubrey Pike, Alan Goodman, Ian Dalrymple, Mr Michaelis, Jack Whitaker of Trinity, Ralph Nattrass, and Christopher Mason and T C Larkworthy of Emmanuel. There are numerous descriptions of visits and excursions made while staying at King's Norton, including Edgbaston, the botanical gardens, art galleries, concerts, Birmingham, the Cadbury's factory, and Stratford-on-Avon. May - has a poem published in the 'New Cambridge'. September - news that she got a distinction in her Higher School Certificate and is offered a state scholarship by the Board of Education as a result. There are loose copies of theatre programmes in the diary. At back: photograph of Perse Star Gym Class and hockey 1st XI, 1924-5, with keys to names, also tennis VI 1925 - names but no photo; various photos at Fordfield and elsewhere, including Alethea, Agatha and Aelfrida, Sylvie Lanchester, Mina, Walter, Constance and Martha Kaufmann; also Alethea and Agatha in their confirmation dresses.
