[Note by Gareth Farmer, 6 July 2012: this file contains an early draft of a proposed first chapter of Veronica Forrest-Thomson’s Cambridge thesis. Based on new evidence (as at the above date) it appears that she intended the opening chapter of her thesis to be called ‘Linguistics and Poetry’. This chapter was to examine the ‘scientific’ nature of linguistics and its application to understanding poetry. Only a small proportion of this material was ultimately included in the thesis.]
