Letter from T D [Thomas Dyke] Acland to Emily Davies, 1863-01-14
Scope and Contents
Supports the aim of improving girls' education and giving credentials to those who receive it, but raises difficulties. Girls need privacy to flourish and should not compete with boys. Cannot assent to the opening of Oxford Local Examinations to girls; the Cambridge method of examining entire schools may be better suited. University examiners, being unmarried clergymen, do not have the experience to judge girls. Female training schools show the danger of overworking young women intellectually; Revd F [Frederick] Cook can advise. There is a practical difficulty in examining in music. Does not expect inconvenience to the Universities in opening examinations to girls. Refers ED to Dr [Francis] Jeune, former Vice-Chancellor. Suggests seeking the Oxford Delegacy's help with an experimental parallel examination adapted for girls' schools. Costs are incurred by examinations. Sends his book on the Oxford examinations [Some Account of the Origin and Objects of the New Oxford Examinations for the Title of Associate in Arts]. 4 pages.
