Letter [from Emily Davies] to [Sir Thomas Dyke] Acland, 1864-12-28
Scope and Contents
Replies to TDA's letter of 22 December [GCPP Davies 6/3/1]. The Commission ought to consider girls' schools but will not do so without strong persuasion. It is not rivalry between the sexes that she is advocating, but encouragement of women to do as well as they can in any area; they are unlikely to want to do, or to succeed in doing, certain work like men, but 'we scarcely know yet what things are really & what only conventionally appropriate.' In any case the value of education for women lies in itself, not its mercantile benefit. Unsigned draft. 2 pages.
