Personal diaries of Sarah Mason: File 6, 1881-06-04 - 1882-09-05
Scope and Contents
Volume 5 of the diaries. In addition to the general details described above she mentions moving from London to Northampton in August 1881; she describes her final examinations, beginning on 30 November 1881; from 8 December 1881 she gives detailed accounts of farewells and last gatherings in College, and mentions that she and Charlie [Hannah] Lister have been copying out College songs ‘for the last two or three days’ [presumably these are the songs recorded in GCPP Tebbutt 5]; she notes the ‘news that I had gained a First Class’ on 14 December 1881; and she returns to Cambridge for a couple of days on 27 January 1882, giving another detailed account of the presentations in the Senate House to Wranglers and the traditional award of the wooden spoon to the man with the lowest mark in the Mathematics Tripos, including a description of the spoon itself, 28 January 1882. The diary tails off by the beginning of April 1882; there are seven entries only between 3 April and 5 September. The entry for 5 September records the death of Sarah Mason’s cousin Anna; she also says ‘It is a long time since I wrote anything in my diary having nothing of interest to write’.
