Scope and Contents

Volume 4 of the diaries. In addition to the general details described above she mentions ‘my last speech in the Junior Debate’, 26 April 1880 (see GCPP Tebbutt 6 for Sarah Mason’s notes for the speech she gave at this debate); the performance of ‘four Frenchmen with two dancing bears - - - ‘, 1 May 1880; a Military Tournament at the Agricultural Hall, 23 June 1880; a doctor’s certificate, 30 June 1880 [probably for the insomnia which caused her to miss a term at Girton]; time spent in Scotland with her cousin Anna and Anna's husband John McDonald, July to November 1880; and her return to Girton in January 1881. She gives a detailed account of the presentations in the Senate House to Wranglers and the traditional award of the wooden spoon to the man with the lowest mark in the Mathematics Tripos, including a description of the spoon itself. 29 January 1881; she comments regularly on her sleep patterns during this term; she records the vote in the Senate House about the granting of Certificates to women students and says ‘the Vice-Chancellor who is against us is reported to have looked quite green’, 24 February 1881; she records an event which appears to have been held to mark the archaeological finds from the Anglo-Saxon cemetery in the grounds of Girton, 16 March 1881, and makes reference to the ongoing dig during late March. She visits Brighton in late April 1881. She gives a detailed account of the ‘Boat Procession’ at the end of the May races.
