Scope and Contents

Pages 80-92. Most of this chapter consists of a reproduction of L J S’s diary for 1944, with some initial commentary and further commentary interspersed between diary entries. The commentary often fills in detail not supplied by the diary. The diary entries are broadly similar in content to those in Chapters 4 and 5, though an additional theme is the growing hope of an end to the war. On 20 March L J S talked to a Professor Ruse about the possibility of doing a higher degree in mathematics. In May there were severe air raids in Southampton. On 17 June L J S attended an oral exam in London in spite of ongoing air raids. In July she was injured by a flying bomb in Southampton and subsequently suffered from a bad back, although the extent of her injuries was not known until some time later, when she gave up plans to carry on with teaching to concentrate on research instead. She took an extended holiday in Lancashire from mid-July to mid-September, during which she heard that she had achieved a first class in her London BA external degree. On 2 October L J S registered for a teaching certificate and from December she began teaching mathematics etc part-time at Winchester County High School for Girls. In a short section at the end of the chapter she describes a teaching practice at Shirley Junior School in Southampton.
