Scope and Contents

Described by Laura Seddon herself as ‘an accumulation of Girton material’, the scrapbook contains letters, cuttings, postcards, photographs and material relating to the Girton Centenary in 1969, all pasted in or attached with photograph corners. The volume is paginated and includes:
Letters to L S concerning Manchester Association of Cambridge University Women events, 1951-70: correspondents include E M Chrystal (Registrar of the Roll, Newnham College), Lady Simon of Wythenshawe, Rosemary Murray, Robin Hammond (including correspondence concerning donations by MACUW to the Third Foundation, ie New Hall), and Muriel Bradbrook;
Centenary papers and correspondence, 1968-69, including the following:
L S’s involvement through MACUW and the Girton Roll, including correspondence concerning L S taking the chairmanship of the Centenary Appeal in the Manchester area (correspondents include Helen McMorran, Muriel Bradbrook, Poppy Jolowicz, Mary Cartwright, and John Chambers (Appeal Office)); plans for Wolfson Court; list of Centenary events; Centenary Appeal literature; papers concerning the visit of the Queen Mother as the College Visitor, 10 June 1969, including b/w photo of her with Bertha Jeffreys and Muriel Bradbrook on that occasion, text of speech given by Muriel Bradbrook and detailed report of the event; papers concerning the Roll centenary dinner and weekend; cuttings and papers concerning the Girton College Symposium on Computer Science, including programme; and an article from The Times by Susanne Puddefoot (Girton 1954) entitled ‘Light Stockings’, concerning Girton history, her own years at Girton, and commemoration of the Centenary, illustrated with historical images, together with a related letter to L S from S P, 1969 (pages 10-11);
Images, profiles and obituaries of various Girton figures, chiefly cut from the Girton Review, including: Mary Cartwright; Muriel Bradbrook (including Gerda Cohen, ‘Medium Dry’, 1976, on the retirement of M B); Helen McMorran (including ‘Memories of Helen McMorran’ by L S); Bertha Jeffreys; Sarah Tebbutt (née Mason); Edith Shuttleworth, née Hutton, Girton 1915 (Observer Magazine article by Judith Judd entitled ‘Girton Old Girl’, based on an interview with Edith Shuttleworth: see also GCRF 2/1/1/15); and Juliet Campbell (article by Valerie Grove);
