Letters from Hurrion Rushmer to Hilda Gosling, 1918 - 1921
Scope and Contents
These letters record a close and loving friendship and the sharing of many common interests including tennis, theatre and mutual friends. It appears that Hilda always considered marriage to Hurrion an unlikely prospect and the letters appear to have ceased after Hilda's marriage to John Gardner in 1921, but the the friendship was extended to Hilda's husband and daughter and appears to have lasted for many years.

Biographical / Historical
Hurrion Rushmer was introduced to Hilda Gosling in the early summer of 1918 by Mrs Florence H Cossar, who asked her to befriend him after his sufferings during military service in France. Florence Cossar, who was married to Horace James Cossar of Queens' College, Cambridge, regularly hosted tea parties for undergraduates at St Luke's Lodge, Alpha Road, Cambridge, which was a popular meeting place for students generally. Hurrion Rushmer had studied at Queens' College before studying theology at Ridley Hall. After his ordination in 1919 he worked as a curate in Great Yarmouth, relatively close to his family home in Ormesby, Norfolk.
