Includes: 4 April 1888, from Bournemouth - ‘I am thinking of Gertrude [?Jekyll] taking up her abode in Boscobel [Boscobel House, Staffs.?] today & will send her a few words of greeting. I wish I could feel a little more sympathetic to her in the business, but I cannot’; 17 July 1888, from Bournemouth - ‘It is really v. kind of your good friend Mr Rate - - it is a great adventure’ - ‘Poor Carry is very anxious over the non-arrival of some papers for the Girton meeting; 31 July 1888 c/o L N Rate esq, Bayreuth, Germany; 14 August 1888, from Redcar - ‘dashed to find you were not coming till Wednesday week - - I suppose it is the holiday children - - you have had a splendid time with those dear kind Rates - - ‘; 19 August 1888, from Redcar with instructions to Margaret for getting the house cleaned for her return - ‘We are keen to hear about the great Festival - - Saltburn was placarded with offers of trains to the Crys. Pal. You might have come by a return excursion. We want you sadly’; Thurs night [?August 1888] - ‘The Redcar air will be splendid I expect. Good Mrs W. will look after you well’; 14 September 1888, addressed c/o G Howard, Naworth Castle, Brampton, Cumberland - ‘It seems to me we are drifting tow.ds K[irkby] L[onsdale] rather steadily’, also containing 12 September 1888 - ‘We have had a search for the 2 Coop news - - ‘ - ‘I presume you are going to Lydia’s but you don’t say’; 20 September 1888, addressed c/o the Jex-Blake family in Redditch - ‘come home in a sweet temper. There may be things to try you’, also contains a separate note, undated; 31 October 1888, from Kirkby Lonsdale - ‘It is a small Vicarage, rooms small & not too many. But I think we could make it do - - ‘ - 'Ch[urch] more beautiful than I expected. P. seems to be delighted. - - No difficulty about our not moving for 3 months’; 11 November 1888, addressed to Tetsworth, Oxon, containing a debate over whether the family should move to Kirkby Lonsdale or Ware, Hertfordshire.
