Letters to Rupert Christiansen and related papers, 1976 - 1978
Scope and Contents
Rupert Christiansen studied English at King's College, Cambridge and was taught by Q D Leavis. His collected file of papers includes the following:
Christiansen's first essay for Q D Leavis, on Herman Melville and Mark Twain, 12 January 1976, with Q D Leavis' comments - a note by Christiansen reads 'marked with incredible care - and some ferocious put-downs (merited!)';
Copies of three letters from Q D Leavis to Brian Worthington, March - July 1976, including thoughts on teaching Christiansen and on the teaching of English in Cambridge generally;
Letter, 4 July 1976, from Q D Leavis to Rupert Christiansen, just after his results had been posted, largely discussing the novels of Emma L[athen], who Q D Leavis notes has been called 'the Jane Austen of the American detective novel', also mentioning work on Q D Leavis's commission from Edinburgh University Press on 'Melville's great phase (1853-6)' and recommending that RC read Edith Wharton;
Four postcards sent by Q D Leavis to Rupert Christiansen after he had graduated and gone to the USA (Columbia) as a Fulbright Scholar, 1977-78.
