Lent Term 1905, 1905-01 - 1905-03
Scope and Contents
DH travels to Southampton with her family to see her brother embark on a troop ship.
Back at Girton expresses annoyance that only Tory papers and the Daily Telegraph are available in the Reading Room. The unrest in Russia makes her think of Ania’s family in Moscow; DH states that peaceful demonstrations will be easily quelled by military force. Girtonians subscribe to the Russian strike fund. DH attends a meeting on Free Trade in the Guildhall. Hard court tennis matches continue, even in freezing temperatures; DH improvises a racquet court in the (empty) swimming bath and also joins the college choral society. She tells her mother that Miss Clover is suggesting an appeal to City Companies (Guilds) for college funds. Meanwhile she follows news of the election in Westmorland, which the Liberals win. Emily Davies visits the college and upbraids the staff for not doing enough for Women’s Suffrage.
