Lent and Easter Terms 1904, 1904-01 - 1904-06
Scope and Contents
DH remarks that Ania Abrikossoff, who has returned to Russia, is much missed. DH begins to assemble a ‘small Liberal political library’, including temperance leaflets and pamphlets, to inform debates in the Political Club. She complains that motions put forward by Tory students are invariably dull. DH defends the Girton songs against the charge of vulgarity. These letters contains details of many essay themes and titles as well as motions for debate. DH remarks on political distinctions between Newnham and Girton: whereas all the dons at Girton are in favour of Free Trade, those at Newnham are Protectionists. A letter from Lady Howard to DH, of 12 March 1904, contains proposals for a scheme to pay off half of Girton’s debt: Lady Howard would contribute £2,000 on condition that 9 other people do so. Miss Clover organises a sub-committee to progress this plan. DH describes her exam papers in detail, including disappointment in questions set. A summer party for the gyps is planned.
