Michaelmas Term 1903, 1903-10 - 1903-12
Scope and Contents
DH attends Professor Marshall’s [Arthur Marshall] lectures, having been warned by Miss McArthur in advance to behave impeccably, as Marshall ‘puts all the difficulty he can in the way of women’. The economies in College continue: the number of gyps has been reduced although the number of students has increased, and DH is concerned at the increased workload for the remaining gyps. DH also expresses disappointment with the College management, particularly in relation to the library budget. DH continues to combine her study with an active participation in College life, and political debates in particular. She proposes the motion that ‘class distinctions are a hindrance to progress’, which is adopted for the intercollegiate debate between Newnham and Girton in December. The motion is defeated. Academically, DH makes progress and is awarded a number of high grades for essays. With some friends, she organises a Christmas party for the gyps.
