Lent and Easter Terms 1903, 1903-01 - 1903-06
Scope and Contents
DH’s preparation for exams meant that the number of letters written in this period is considerably less than previously. The first letter of January 1903 is taken up with descriptions of social events and entertainments in London after Christmas, including a visit to the Women’s University Club with Miss McArthur. Once back at Cambridge DH describes the bad behaviour of the male undergraduates at lectures, who fail to observe the custom that several benches should be left free for Girton and Newnham students to sit together, apart from the male undergraduates. Later, in May, she observes that Girtonians fear their essays being read aloud in front of male undergraduates. There are further political debates in this term, including more on education (DH proposes the motion that education should be made available without charge to everyone up to the age of 16 or 17) and on Irish affairs. DH attempts to recruit freshers to the Liberal side and plans to see Lloyd George speak at the 80 Club dinner. In June DH gives an account of the examinations.
