Michaelmas Term 1902, 1902-10 - 1902-12
Scope and Contents
DH informs her mother that there is an addition to the ‘radical band’ in Girton, in the person of a Swedish student. DH is shocked to hear how undemocratic the electoral system in Sweden is. Political discussion is dominated by the Government’s Education Bill, to which DH and other liberals are opposed. DH attends a public meeting in the Guildhall on this issue and notes that ‘"'town' was all on our side, as usual, against 'gown'". Debates on education are also held within the College, and when the Liberal side loses, DH is incensed that seven Girton dons voted as neutrals. As regards life at Girton, DH describes new economy measures, including the sparing use of candles, coal etc., and notes with asperity that these have been introduced due to debts resulting from the building of the Chapel. DH comments on the attitudes of various dons to women attending lectures -some very sympathetic and some unhelpful and hostile. DH and her fellow candidates for the History Tripos have a number of meetings and discussions with Miss McArthur who gives advice on study and exam preparation. A letter of 9 November 1902 includes an extremely detailed account of the manner in which female students may go about being entered for University examinations, thereby being ‘classed’, though they may not be awarded a degree. DH describes in detail the requirements both for the Girton Entrance Examination and the Previous Examination or ‘Little-Go’. In December DH remarks on rumours that Miss Welsh is to leave Girton. Also in December, Miss McArthur offers to give DH extra tuition and she writes to her mother requesting that Miss McArthur be invited to Castle Howard over the Christmas vacation.
