Lectures on Spain, 1980 - 1982
Scope and Contents
File contains the following:
1) typescript, with ms amendments and additions, of a lecture given to Cambridge University Hispanic Society, 1982, mainly about a minority in Spain, 1923-39, which included writers of the ‘so-called Generation of ‘98’, including Unamuno, Pio Baroja and Antonio Machado - the lecture is partly autobiographical, touching on H G’s acquaintanceship with writers including Federico Garcia Lorca and Jorge Guillen;
2) typescript, with ms amendments and additions, of a lecture on Federico Garcia Lorca and his family, given in April 1980.
The file also contains the following:
Biographical notes on Lorca and his family; and ‘Spain over Fifty Years: People, Books, Politics’, 4pp typescript (probably a handout given out at lecture no 1 above), including 1) biographical notes on Helen Grant; 2) historical and political background 1923-39; 3) notes on some Spanish public figures in education, politics, literature etc (including brief notes on H G’s personal knowledge of Antonio Machado, Juan Ramon Jimenez, Jorge Guillen, Federico Garcia Lorca, Pedro Salinas, Vicente Aleixandre, and Luis Cernuda) and 4) brief notes on ‘some of the Catalan writers [etc] - - - whom I have known well’, including Josep Batista i Roca and Rosa Leveroni.
