Diary, 1926
Scope and Contents
Exercise book, front cover inscribed ‘Helen F Newsome’, containing handwritten diary entries, poems etc. There are few dates but the first few pages comprise diary entries for 17 and 19 February 1926, in which she talks chiefly of Walter de la Mare [for whom she was working as secretary] and his wife. The volume has been begun from both ends: writing at the back includes notes dated Wed May 26th [1926?] beginning ‘I shall try to write up a few impressions [?] now and then, because keep a diary I cannot - - - For some time now I have been at Taplow as secretary to Mr de la Mare. It hasn’t been a very great success - - - ‘ She goes on to discuss her work and W de la M and his family over five pages, which include some shorthand notes. The volume also contains drafts of poems and other writing in Helen’s hand and further shorthand notes.
