Scope and Contents
Parcel containing several small pieces of wood, the outer wrapper labelled: ‘Part of the Coffin of Washington lately removed at Mt.Vernon to me by Mrs.Lewis GSN’.
'Mrs Lewis' can be identified as Eleanora (Nelly) Custis (1779-1852), George Washington's adopted daughter, who married Major Lawrence Lewis (1767-1839), Washington's nephew and (in the 1830s) his last surviving executor.
