Scope and Contents

Three letters to Nora G Dunlop and six to James Dunlop. Most of the letters have no envelope but all but three are dated. The letters mainly concern sittings for their portrait but there is also mention of the portrait he is painting of the King [George IV].

There is a colour reproduction of the portrait by Thomas Lawrence, 'Mr and Mrs James Dunlop' referred to in these letters. It is taken from David Piper, 'Between Georgian Decorum and Melodrama' (Art News, Vol. LIX no.3, May 1960 pp 30-31, colour reproduction, fig. 6). The painting itself is in the Worcester Art Museum, MA 01609, USA. A letter of 14 September 1970 from St John Gore of the National Trust asking College's help with the background to the portrait is at GCAC 4/7/11/1.
