Letter from Matthew Arnold to Emily Davies, 1864-12-28
Scope and Contents
Thanks ED for her manifesto [probably 'Reasons for the admission of the University Local Examinations to girls', GCPP Davies 8/192] and asks, if it is not too late, to sign the Memorial [on the admission of girls to University Local Examinations]. Does not think the [Schools Inquiry] Commission will be willing to include girls' schools. His own membership would compromise its work, but its composition is unbalanced. People's spirits must be changed before their habits. On Athenaeum letterhead. 2 pages.
