Scope and Contents
1) Article, entitled ‘Miss Emily Davies’ Farewell Address’, page 4, discusses ED’s decision not to stand for re-election and her views of ‘compulsion’.
2) Article, entitled ‘The London School Board. Retirement of Miss Davies’, page 5-6. The article includes the printed text of ED’s farewell speech in which she discusses the work of the London School Board and its committees. She discusses decisions taken, in particular the decision to include religious instruction in the Board’s schools; subjects studied in school, in particular needlework for girls; ‘compulsion’ and how it has increased school attendance; how attendance is affected by poverty and lack of paternal involvement; and the need for more women to become involved with the Board and more generally in public duty. The speech is followed by a vote of thanks from Mr [Paul] Tidman.
