Memorial laid before the Senate of the University of London by Newson Garrett, 1862-05
Scope and Contents
Memorial laid before the Senate of the University of London on 30 April [1862], signed Newson Garrett: the application of Garrett's daughter [Elizabeth] for admission to the University's examinations having been refused on legal grounds, he asks that the imminent new Charter remove the technical legal objection which appears to be the only obstacle to the admission of women. Resolution moved by Vice-Chancellor, Mr [George] Grote, on 7 May, 'That the Senate will endeavour ... to obtain a modification of the Charter' to admit women to examinations, defeated by casting vote of Chancellor. Letter from W B Carpenter [Registrar] to Newson Garrett informing him that his Memorial has not been accepted, not from opposition to the higher education of women but reluctance to modify the constitution of the University. Printed by Emily Faithfull at the Victoria Press, Great Coram Street, [London] WC.
