'Admission of Ladies to University Examinations. Report of the discussion at the meeting of Convocation held at Burlington House on Tuesday May 12th 1863', 1863-05-12
Scope and Contents
Transcript of shorthand notes of Messrs Clarke & Bromfield, 3 Bolt Court, Fleet Street. A motion 'That the Senate [of the University of London] be requested to consider whether the objects of the University, as declared in the Charter, would not be promoted by making provision for the examination and certification of women', amended by adding 'by means of degrees', was discussed and defeated. The motion was proposed by Mr J Robson BA, objected to by several speakers and finally defended by Mr Bompas LLB. Objections include: the deleterious effect of preparation for examinations on motherhood, homemaking and feminine meekness; the evident American influence on the proposal; the visible differences between the sexes in the animal kingdom having equivalents in the differing character and intellect of men and women; the fear of the thin edge of the wedge and of ridicule likely to be incurred by the University. Arguments in support are based on the need to improve female education and to provide a means by which governesses could prove their worth. Ad hominem objections to certain signatories of 'Reasons for the admission of women to university examinations' [GCPP Davies 8/192] which had been presented to Convocation. 126 pages.
