Note [by Emily Davies] about Jessie Meriton White's application for admission to study for a Diploma in Medicine, 1856
Scope and Contents
Jessie Meriton White [later Madame Mario] applied for admission to the University of London to study medicine. Legal opinion, asked whether the Senate has power to grant degrees in medicine, arts, or laws to females, and if so whether it can refuse to admit as candidates those who have complied with the University's requirements, is that 'Miss J M White cannot become a candidate for a medical degree to be conferred by University of London'. Unsigned but in ED's hand.
