Letter from Robert J Upton, of 20 Austin Friars, London EC, to Newson Garrett, 1862-03-21
Scope and Contents
Legal opinion is that a female is entitled to claim examination of the Society of Apothecaries for a qualification to practise as an apothecary, but this is of little service in connection with the question of Garrett's daughter [Elizabeth]'s admission to the University of London degree in medicine. If application fails advises approaching the College of Physicians to admit her under their new licence to practise physic. Endorsed with copy opinion of James Hannen: the Society of Apothecaries are bound to admit to examination and to grant a certificate of qualification to practise as an apothecary a woman who fulfils the conditions required of a man, and such a woman is entitled to practise in the same manner as a man with the same qualifications.
