General papers on Judaeo-Spanish, 1938 - 1961
Scope and Contents
Typescripts of three papers read to various societies as follows:
a) paper read to CUWRC [Cambridge University Women's Research Club, particularly active in the 1930s], March 1938, on the 'Spanish Jews or Sephardim of the Ancient Turkish Empire', their language and CMC's own research into the language. Includes translations into English of some of the stories acquired by CMC in the Balkans;
b) paper read to Cambridge University Spanish Society, March 1938, on the expulsion of the Spanish Jews and the preservation and development of the language of those who settled in Salonica and Constantinople. Includes the first few verses of Genesis Chapter 1 in Judaeo-Spanish;
c) paper, ts and ms, given in Nottingham, 2 March 1961, entitled 'Aspects of Judaeo-Spanish', concentrating on the gradual disappearance of Judaeo-Spanish, its sound systems and pronunciation, dialectal divergences, and the light which it throws on the vocabulary of Old Spanish.
