Scope and Contents

Card index for a projected Judaeo-Spanish dictionary. CC produced over 30,000 handwritten entries on slips of paper. Some of these include information as to the etymology, derivation and meaning of the word or word form, but many are a simple recording of a word, no further information being given. In 1938 Crews made the following statement about her scheme: 'My own work consists in making a dictionary of the modern spoken language. When it is complete it may furnish us with some new facts which will permit us to make a classification of the dialectical elements of the various communities. It will, in the main, cover only the spoken language. The reason for this restriction of the subject is that the time factor must be considered - the living language is rapidly disappearing' [from GCPP Crews 4/5 item a]. As at April 2008, the original slips are thought to be held in the Instituto Internacional de Estudios Sefardies y Andalusies in Madrid [according to file notes from the mid 1970s]. They were microfilmed by Cambridge University Library in the 1970s: Girton currently holds six microfilms of the dictionary slips, as follows: A-D, D-K, K-P, P-Y, Y-Z, and Oddments. 3 small bundles of the original slips are still held by Girton - these would appear to be the 'Oddments' section, which in fact comprise research notes and bibliographical material and only a handful of actual dictionary slips, including some medical terms. The microfilms and 3 small bundles of original slips are contained in 1 box. Girton also holds the copyflow sheets from which the microfilms were produced [ie the slips photocopied onto large sheets for ease of microfilming, currently in 6 boxes].
