Scope and Contents

Chiefly watercolour landscapes, together with some still lifes and occasional oils on canvas, pasted into the volume, and painted in the style of various artists, chiefly Hercules Brabazon Brabazon [a good friend of BLSB with whom she often painted], also Daubigny, D Cox, H Moore, Constable, Decamp, Rubens, Corot, Turner, Crome, and Smallfield. Many pages are blank; some have clearly had pictures removed. Bookplate pasted in depicting the Brabazon family coat of arms with the motto 'Vota Vita Mea'. No dates given. 130 pages, volume paginated. A few titles are given, as follows:
p. 4 modelled on 'The Locks at Optevoz', after Brabazon-Daubigny; also colour photo of same, loose;
p. 10 'Scalands after H. Moore', initialled BLSB;
p. 44 'Barn at Rottingdean after F[rederick] Smallfield but not a copy';
p. 48 'Algiers - after Brabazon';
p. 50 'Scalands';
p. 65 'Gorge of Blida [Algeria] After North';

Loose at back: Arab market, Blidah; Arab in the corn market, Blidah; and two other watercolours.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Donated to Girton College in February 2010 via the estate of Eileen Barber. Eileen Barber's grandfather was the nephew of Hercules Brabazon Brabazon. The two sketchbooks were amongst the papers and sketchbooks of Brabazon, which were passed down through the family to Eileen Barber.
