Sketchbook - Algeria, 1856 - 1876
Scope and Contents
160 Sketches in Algeria by BLSB 1856 to 1876. Including watercolours, watercolour washes, monochrome watercolours, pencil sketches, and ink sketches, all pasted into the volume. Many are untitled landscape sketches; some include remarks and instructions relating to colour, additions, omissions etc. 104 pages, volume paginated. p.1 has a bookplate pasted in depicting the Brabazon family coat of arms with the motto 'Vota Vita Mea'. Some of the sketches and paintings have specific titles and / or dates, as follows:

Loose at back: sheet with newspaper obituaries for BLSB pasted on; also photograph of BLSB in later years, clipped from a newspaper; also handwritten quote from a letter from Mary Howitt to BLSB and a quote from George Eliot about BLSB's painting.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donated to Girton College in February 2010 via the estate of Eileen Barber. Eileen Barber's grandfather was the nephew of Hercules Brabazon Brabazon. The two sketchbooks were amongst the papers and sketchbooks of Brabazon, which were passed down through the family to Eileen Barber.
