Green Scrapbook, 1846 - 1851
Scope and Contents
Rigid covered book, 37cm x 28cm, with brown paper leaves. BLSB's London visiting card is pasted on the inside of the front cover, with pencilled note by the artist reading 'About 150 sketches in this Vol., from 1848 to 1851', with '1846' added above the earlier date. The book originally contained 170 items, including 66 watercolours, a series of 50 small pencil / ink-wash drawings arising from a visit to Scotland, and sundry other sketches. Some of the items were removed before the volume was acquired by Girton College. There are various pencilled notes against the pictures throughout; there are also labels pasted in by John Crabbe noting the titles of pictures which are no longer in the volume and their whereabouts. The pictures include what appears to be a self-portrait, 1846, also 'Willy & Pater' [no date]. It is thought that the material was gathered into some sort of order by BLSB during her last years.
