Printouts of colour scans of three letters written by Annie Ellis to her former student Margaret Walker while Margaret was at Girton College, together with typescript transcripts prepared by Margaret Sudbury in 2018. In the letters, Annie Ellis relates events at Manchester High School for Girls, compares notes with Margaret about life at Girton and in Cambridge, and mentions Barbara [Doncaster, later Mrs Yendley, also educated at Manchester High School for Girls, with whom Margaret shared B19 / B20 at Girton].
The letters are dated 6 and 27 November 1949 and 7 March 1951. In them AE replies to points MW has made in letters to her: she is delighted that MW is at Girton and enjoying it; she shares MW’s views on Newnham, suggesting that the division of Newnham into halls was an unnecessary subdivision of a small institution; she feels Girton’s adoption of the codes of behaviour of the men’s colleges was good; she mentions people she knew in Cambridge including some in the men’s colleges; she feels Girton was more formal in her time; she discusses rowing on the Cam; she is not surprised that the Porters Lodge is being enlarged; and she describes visits to Skye, encouraging MW in her plans to visit.
