 File
Reference Code: GBR/0271/GCPP Tebbutt 8

Scope and Contents

1) Four page letter addressed to 'My dear Dolly', signed 'S C Julyan' [Sarah Courtney Julyan, Girton 1878], addressed from Trenance, Penzance, dated and postmarked 30 December 1921, to ‘Mrs Tebbutt, 14 Meriden Street, Coventry’. The letter details S C J’s teaching and academic career: having taught mathematics in Shrewsbury and taken an ad eundem degree at Trinity College, Dublin, she attended extension lectures on theology before studying for the ‘Archbishop’s Theological Diploma for Women, equivalent to an honours degree at Oxford or Cambridge’, which she achieved in 1897, after which she was licensed to teach theology. She returned to live in Penzance in 1911, where she appears to have looked after various family members. Recently elected secretary of a ‘Palestine Exhibition’ (she encloses a programme entitled ‘Palestine in Penzance’, 1921), she is now secretary for girls for the ‘Cambridge Locals’. She finishes by saying ‘Last year I had the [Girton] Gibson Greek Text prize for an Essay on ‘The Xian Order of Human Society according to the teaching of St Paul’. I sent the money back to the Girton Library to be expended in Theol. Books’.
2) Five page letter addressed to ‘My dear Dollie’, signed ‘your old friend Charlie’ [Hannah Binns, née Lister, Girton 1878], dated 27 November 1927, addressed from Sydney, Australia, to ‘Mrs Tebbutt, 14 Meriden Street, Coventry’. The letter thanks S T for her letter about her family of four and updates her on her own family situation, having been widowed in 1915 with seven children to bring up, at which point she took up teaching mathematics. She asks if S T remembers the Tillyards and says ‘I think one of them - Dr Tillyard - is connected with Sydney University’. She also mentions ‘Miss Julyan’ [as above] and ‘Miss Burstall’ [Sara Annie Burstall, Girton 1878] who, she believes, ‘came out to Sydney a long time ago - - - ‘.
The file also contains copies of Girton College Register entries for 1878, including Sara Burstall, Sarah Julyan, Hannah [Charlie] Lister, and Sarah Mason.
