Scope and Contents

Typescript transcript of the diary of Sarah Ellen Tebbutt (nee Mason) for her years at Girton, 1878-1880. The almost daily entries cover activities at College and in Cambridge including work, lectures, social life and the clubs and societies of which she was a member. She describes debates at College and at the Union, singing at College and with CUMS. The file also contains a 1page typescript 'Extract from a letter (probably dated 1934) from Mrs Binns (née Hannah Lister, known as 'Charlie'), written from Sydney, Australia, when she heard of the death of her old friend Sarah Mason', briefly describing their days at Girton.

These items were donated by Mrs Tebbutt's daughter, Mrs Beatrice S M Lester, in 1970.

Bibliography

An extract from Sarah Mason's diary, based on this transcript, was published in the Girton Review, Lent Term 1971, which also contains a full page reproduction of a photograph of her aged about 20.
