Fifteen letters from Celia von Abendorff to E Joan Wilson Miller, 1961 - 2011
Scope and Contents
The first letter, dated 20 January 1961, expresses Celia’s pleasure at being in contact with E J W M again and contains news of work and family.
The remaining letters, dated 2009-2010, contain chiefly news and reminiscences of fellow Girtonians and discussion of their respective experiences of school, Girton (including mutual debate over whether they ever ate swan at Girton), the Cambridge Training College and their subsequent careers and family life.
Names of contemporaries mentioned include: Nancy Ball, Myfanwy Bell, Audrey Brooks, Inge Goodwin née Simon), Connie Harland, Mary Hobson, Wendy Maskew, Brenda Ryman, and Dorothy Thompson.
A letter of 20 November 2009 includes a paragraph on Celia’s experience of Harrogate Grammar School.
A letter of 29 November 2009 gives detail of a sabbatical year in Celia’s career, 1956-57, during which she visited various European universities to investigate their teaching of physics, returning to Chelsea College in 1957.

Biographical / Historical
Celia von Abendorff (née Dodd) was born in 1923 at Clifford, Yorkshire, the daughter of William John Potter Dodd, chemist, and Hetty Webster. Educated at Harrogate Grammar School, she came to Girton in 1941 to study Natural Sciences. She then attended the Cambridge Training College, 1944-45, where she gained the Cambridge Teachers’ Certificate. She taught physics at Bedford Girls' Modern School from 1945 to 1947 and became a lecturer in physics at Chelsea Polytechnic in 1947. Her son, Richard von Abendorff, studied medicine at Girton from 1981-84. She died in August 2011.
