Girton College: Foundation, Hitchin and Girton, 1865 - 1912
Scope and Contents
These papers were given to the College by members of ED's family. Most of them may be considered part of her archive as a founder and officer of Girton College rather than her archive of personal papers. For this reason the reference codes originally assigned to them were prefixed with GC rather than ED. They were originally listed by Marguerite Gollancz. MG preserved the original physical arrangement (which was probably that of ED herself and/or Lady Stephen) but superimposed a classification scheme which necessitated a non-sequential referencing scheme. The present listing has brought MG's referencing system back into numerical order for greater ease of access but it is possible to reconstruct the original physical order by consulting MG's typescript list.
