The files listed here appear to be all that survives of M G Lloyd Thomas's years at Girton. Most of the papers date from the mid-1940s. They present an interesting snapshot of her dealings with her students and her own interests and activities, academic and otherwise, towards the end of her active years of teaching and administration at Girton.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Gwyneth Lloyd Thomas (known as Gwyneth) was born on 10 December 1899 at Liscard, Cheshire, the daughter of the Rev. Joseph Morgan Lloyd Thomas and Alice Evans, headmistress. Educated at Nottingham High School and King Edward VI High School, Birmingham, she read English at Somerville College, Oxford, 1919-22. She taught English at Birkenhead High School, 1922-23, and at Cheltenham Ladies' College, 1924-28, before arriving at Girton College as a Lecturer in English in 1928. She remained at Girton until 1952 as a lecturer, Fellow and Director of Studies in English (with the exception of the year 1949-50, when she was Mary Whiton Calking Visiting Professor, Wellesley College, Massachusetts, USA). She spent the remainder of her working life as Headmistress of Channing School, Highgate, 1952-64. M G Lloyd Thomas's research interests included John Dryden, Andrew Marvell and Gerard Manley Hopkins, and her publications include work on all three. She also edited an anthology of verse entitled 'Travellers' Verse', published in 1946. Interests and activities outside teaching were many: M G L T was a Governor of the Cambridgeshire High School for Girls, a member of the Finance and General Purposes Sub-Committee of the Evelyn Nursing Home in Cambridge, a Nursing Member of the British Red Cross Society 1940-46, and a Nursing Auxiliary (Civil Nursing Reserve) 1940-46. M G Lloyd Thomas was a Life Fellow of Girton College from 1952 until her death on 28 August 1978.
