The papers listed here include a miscellany of personal and biographical items, together with personal diaries, sketchbooks, photographs, and some correspondence, including transcripts of correspondence between Elspeth Giles and Julian Lathrop, an American officer who spent 3 months at St John’s College, Cambridge just after the end of World War I.

Conditions Governing Access

The collection was closed until 31 December 2018, at the request of the donors. The only exception was GCPP Giles 3/1 which was closed until 31 December 2020.

Biographical / Historical

Elizabeth Giles, known as Elspeth, was born 13 March 1899 in Cambridge, the daughter of Dr Peter Giles, (Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, 1910-35, Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University 1919-20 and Chairman of Girton College Council 1910-18), and Elizabeth Mary Dunn. Educated at St Felix, Southwold and the Perse School for Girls, Cambridge, she studied English at Girton College for seven terms, from 1918 to January 1921, when she left on grounds of ill health. She was the elder sister of Caterina Giles [later Easton, Girton 1921]. Elspeth Giles died in Cambridge on 25 February 1923. Immediate Source of Acquisition

The diaries and sketchbooks were loaned to Girton College for photocopying in 1983 and 1993 respectively. Other items were deposited at various dates during the mid-1990s and additional material was donated by Barbara Wallis (niece of Elspeth Giles) in May 2006 via John Hammond.
